Entry 1- pages 1-12 If They're Willing to Kill Jews, They're Willing to Kill People Who Hide Jews

Maria Andzelm, Poland, 1942-1944

3/17/11

Summary:

Maria's best friend, Rivka is leaving. She left because she is a Jew and is trying not to be killed by a Nazi. Maria didn't know why Jews were hated so much. Maria and her family were Catholics. She was a petite 13 year old farm girl. A few weeks after Rivka left, someone knocked on the door. It was a Jew and she was asking for milk and food for her baby. So they gave her some and she left. Well more and more Jews kept coming. They couldn't buy a lot of food or the Nazi's would think they were giving food the the Jews. Soon they barely fill themselfes up, but they had enough to keep alive. Her little brother was wondering why they kept giving there food away. So their dad said, "What we have, we share." So one night Maria woke up and heard people talking and went back to bed. The next day her father told them not to tell anyone butthey were keeping 2 Jewish boys in the barn. Everyday they went to go feed them and give them books to read.

Entry 2 - pages 13-24

Summary:

Maria's dad works in the barn to make a place for the 2 Jews to hide. The hideout was underground, there was boards over it so you couldn't tell that anything happened. The cows would go to the bathroom and it would go threw the boards and go on their heads. They didn't care though because it is better than getting killed by a Nazi. So really late at night they would sneak into the house and take a shower. They had bites all over from fleas. So they make it under ground. Maria brings food and water to them everyday. The Jews names were Moses and Srulik. Moses asked Maria if she had a book that he could read, so it wouldn't that bad underground. So Maria goes to her neighbor and keeps borrowing books from her to give to Moses. Everyday Maria would wonder when their luck would run out. One day Maria was going to bring food out to them, but her grandma told her to get in her bed. The Nazi's were there, Maria ran inot bed and her brother did the same.

Entry 3-pages 25-37

Summary:

Maria continued to go to Mrs. Olejarczyk to get books. One day she was on her way back and there was a German solider following her. All what he did was slap her really hard on the face, then walked away. She was so happy that he didn't take her away. The Nazi's wanted all the adults to be at the Church at noon. So Maria's parents hid under the barn with Moses. After she covered it up with hay, she turned around to put the pitch fork down. There stood a Nazi, Maria was scared to death. He asked if anyone was home with her. She said that they were at the church where you wanted them to go. After he left she ran inside the house.One day Maria went to go visit her friend and all of a sudden a bomb went off. They quickly ran to Maria's aunts house and hid in the barn. The hid there for three days but then had to leave because it was to dangerous. So they went across the river and stayed at this ladies house. Maria's family was there except her dad. Her dad was shot because a neighbor saw him try to save the 2 boys during the bombs. But Moses and Srulik escaped and lived. One day someone came to there new house and said that Moses has invited them to live with him. So they did. Maria got married at the age of 16 to Moses, and they had two kids, Rosalie and Helene. They were married for 52 years until Moses died of a heart disease.

Entry 4 Pages 38-49 Will I ever See Any of You Again? Are you Even Alive?

Henri Zylberminc, Belgium, 1941-1944

Summary:

Henri knew something was wrong when Gerhard walked into the room wearing a black uniform. Henri asked him why he was wearing it but he said nothing is going to happen to you..... yet. So the next day he and his brothers went to go walk into the school and they told them they couldn't go in there because they were Jewish. So they had to go home. Henri was wondering why them, what did we ever do to them. What if they take his parents shop or their house. So Henri and his friend made up a group and got Jewish kids and met somewhere everyday and talked and laughed. It soon became a hundred Jews and became a secret network of people helping others out. Marcel became president of the group because he partly founded it. One day Paula, Henri's cousin, was on a train and got taken away by the Nazi's. She would send letters and one said it is my destiny. Which means she knows something bad is going to happen to her. So Henri's family thought they should go into hiddening. So the family went into hiding except jack and Henri didn't want to go into hiding. So their parents let them fend for themselves.

Entry 5- pages 50-61

Summary:

Henri and Jack didn't cry when their parents were taken away. Their group kept meeting everyday, at the same place. Less and less people kept showing up. They one day got a letter from one of them and the person said that she is starving. The next letter said It is my Destiny, which mean't she knew something was going to happen to her.The Nazi's list of captured people kept getting longer everyday. One day there was one of Henri's friend was at his house because his family was taken away. One night they stayed up late talking and two Nazi's cars parked outside and started breaking down the doors. So the boys escaped out the window, the Nazi's were firing bullets at them. They ended up hiding in someone else's basement and stayed there for a while. Someone got them a fake ID.

Entry 6- pages 62-71

Summary:

His ID said he was Pierre Faucher. That he was a Catholic and is a worker at Belgian company that makes fur coats. So even if he had a fake ID, he still watched for Gestapo. He got by every time but once. The guard asked him to come with him to see if the number is still valid. So once the guard left the room, Pierre jumped out of the window which was two stories high and started running away. When he got home Marcel was sitting there. Marcel said that Mirjam didn't make it oast the guard with the kids. The guard wouldn't let them go threw and then they toke them to a concentration camp. Pierre went upstairs and looked at all the letters he got from Jewish friends. SO he went into hiding with his parents and six months later there town was liberated. Henri went back to school and graduated and switched his name to Harry Silvers. He married Bella Wunderman. But never found out what happened to his lifesaver, Tony.

"There Must Be a Way to Save the Children."

Hilde jacobsthal, Holland, 1942-1943

Summary:

Hilde was 17 years old and worked at a child care center. She wanted to save the children. She is a German Jew who was born in Berlin and later her family moved to Amsterdam. She was athletic and a excellent swimmer. When she was little she saved up for a canoe and got one but the Nazis' toke it. One of her best friends was Margot Frank. Anne, Margots little sister, tagged along sometimes. Hilde thought she was a chatterbox and a bit annoying. But one day Margot didn't show up, so she went to her house and she wasn't there. So Hilde thought she went into hiding. The theater that she always went to is now a holding place for The Nazis' to put Jews in. So they got to take forty Jews to the child care center and feed them but bring them back in the morning.

Summary:

Hilde and the others kept taking toddlers in. The person in charge told them that they are going to take a few Jewish children and give them to a good family. Hilde's job was to stuff the bed and make it look like a kid war sleeping. Incase a Gestapo came to check on them. The hardest part was trying to get the parents to give up their children to a different family. Hilde ended up getting diphtheria snf hsf yo ho homr snf diy in bed. Day after day Nazis would come to get their family but they didn't want the disease so they left her family alone. Hilde wanted to go into hiding but she thought the person would give her up. When she got home her parents were gone.

Entry 9 4/11/11

p. 98-109

Summary:

Her parents were taken by the Nazis. All Jews are gone except the ones in hiding and they closed the Creche and everyone is gone. Her brother was still alive working for a underground railroad. Hilde mariied a doctor named Max Goldberg and had 3 daughters, Rita, Susan, and Dorothy. She never stopped loving kids. Thanks to her and all of her friends at the Creche they saved over a thousand Jewish children.

Ferenc Schatz, Hungary, 1944-1945

He hid in the corn field so a bomb wouldn't hit him. After that he escaped and found his friend Bela and toke him to a safe house. He joined a underground Zionist Youth organization. Which is dedicated to help save Jews.

Entry 10- pages 110-121

Summary:
Ferenc got his fake ID made out. Now he carries fake empty documents to fill it out with Jewish people, so they don't get taken away. But he continued helping people. Everytime a Nazis stopped him, he didn't hesitate or get scared. He acted and lied to them everytime they saw him. Ferenc went to go see the house that had 50 Jewish orphans. When he was there the Nazis came for the Jewish orphans. But Ferenc stood up to them and said that they couldn't take them because they are part of the IRC. If the Nazis didn't have permission they couldn't take the children. The Nazis believed Ferenc and they left the ophens alone. But later his friend Vera was taken away. But when they were lining up by the river, she jumped in and swam away. A mile down the river she got up and went to the nearest apartment. The apartment let her in. The guy gave Ferenc a letter and said she was with him. So Ferenc brought a new fake ID, which now she had another different name.

Entry 11, 4/20/11

Summary:

At Gundel's Restaurant they would have meeting about the underground. Now they made up a new rule any boy 16 or older has to report for military duty. So Ferenc had to change his to 15. He went to a ladies house and she had a chemical who toke it off. Its always dangerous working with a stranger because they can turn on you. After she erased it he felt unsafe so he left right away. while he was leaving the Red Cross car stopped, grabbed their guns and ran into the house he was just in. The curfew is 6 and if you are late then you will be shot if you were spottod. Well he is usually at home by 5 but he stayed a little later that day. So he ran really fast but his house was bombed. So he grabbed his clothes and stayed in his neighbors basement.

Liliane Belinne, Belgium, 1942- 1944

"How can Those Collaborators Live with Themselves?"

Liliane was hiding in the corn field away from all the fighting which lasted two hours. When she stood up but something scared her so she threw up. When she turned around it was just a cow. Her mom was almost shot for crossing the street to get her son.

Entry 12 4/22/11

Summary:

Since her father was in prison, she went to her uncle, who was like a father to her. Her uncle told her to never trust anyone and don't talk about Jews in front of people. The Gestapo let her father go, so her is back with his family. Her father owned a store. So Liliane had the job of delivering supplies to the underground. She delivered pistols, ammunition, or timing devices for bombs. She was never stopped by a Nazi officier because who would of thought a perky little girl would be carring weapons for the underground. Liliane had a family that were friends but they were Jewish and one day they were told to pack their bags to leave. But one of their friends decided to hide them in their house. So late one night they snuke over to that persons house and hid. Liliane and her family went to go say good byes or at least pretended. They would go into the bathroom and switch their color of shirt and walk back out and leave. They were thinking about getting those six people fake IDs but they didn't know where.The fake papers had the names of her aunt and uncle and cousins that were in Africa. So they could just use those names.

Entry 13, 4/23/11

summary:
Liliane was walking back from the underground when she saw one of her friends. Her friend wanted her to walk with him, so she did. He was going to put a rotten fish on a collaborator's porch. It was her friends house that he was doing that to. She didn't even know that her friend was a collaborator. When she went home her and her Jewish friend went outside and went on a walk. She had a fake ID but she got really nervous passing a officier. So one was walking by and Liliane went and distracted him, so he couldn't see how nervous she was. It worked and so every time they passed a officier, Liliane had to distract and flirt with him. One of her dads workers was Jewish and she couldn't talk to the officier so she pretended like she was deaf. One day she was sitting outside and 2 black cars pulled up and Liliane thought they found out about them and so she hid behind a tree. But they didn't come to get her, they came for Leon, he told Liliane that the collaborators didn't like the fish. Then the mail place got a letter saying that they betrayed them, you hid Jews. So they went into hiding and soon enough the war ended. They save 29 different Jewish kids and adults, it was a miracle.

"Its the Matter of Decency"
Preben Munch Nielsen, Denmark, 1943
Summary: Preben is a young polite teenage boy, who was becoming increasingly vocal in his anger over the Nazi occupation. He was told that wars are also won with heart, courage, and truth. He met a guy named Arne and he wrote his own "Ten Commandments to the Danes." He joined the Student Information Service. Which defied the Nazis by secretly publishing its own underground newspaper. A delivery boy had to hand deliver it because it was to dangerous for someone else who doesn't like Jews. an officier stopped him and wanted to see what he had in his suitcase. So he looked in it but he toke the paper to read. Later the officier showed up at his front door and asked if Preben would help and family find a safe home. So in an hour he met the family at the train station.

Entry 15, 4/27/11

Summary:

He had to bring them to a hotel which then they sailed out of. The doctors trusted Preben. The doctor had to give the little kids a shot tha tput them to sleep, so they wouldn't cry or make any noises. He was told to watch out for Gestapo Juht, a coldhearted Nazi officier. Officier Larsen told them to go hide because more officiers were coming to capture the Jews and the people helping the Jews. More bad news kept coming, more and more Jews were being captured and found and were taken to concentration camps. Preben would now just go up to people who looked worried and would take them in to a safe house. He would also go into the woods and look in the best hiding spots and found Jews and took them to safe houses. They now knew exactly what time the Gestapo comes and the next time that they will be back. They saved 7,000 Jews and the Gestapo only captured 500.
